Intro letter

Hello my name is Stephanie and I am currently a transfer student from Lake Sumter Community College. I graduated and received my A.A degree. This is my first year at UCF. I am originally from Brooklyn, New York and came down to Clermont, Florida about 8 years ago. My current major is Biomedical Sciences. I plan to graduate with a bachelor’s degree and prepare as best I can for medical school. My main goal is to become a cardiologist. I am considering in getting a minor in women studies later on. I chose to take this course because it was a requirement. This class in particular was not but it was one of the many that I could pick from. When I was looking at the list of classes that were available this one caught my attention. In the past I have taken a few psychology courses and enjoyed them so I thought this class can possibly have some similarities. In reality I am not sure exactly what “women studies” is considered other than studying the behaviors of different women. However, I hope that by the end of this semester I will understand this subject better.
Feminism in my opinion, are groups of women (and men in some cases) that have the same belief that both should have equal rights. But, it goes beyond just having equal rights because it’s also about being treated the same the way.  The difference in women studies is that it shows the many ideas that different women have on this matter. Not every woman out there believes in being treated equally whether it may be because of religion or they were taught as children not to. So, I believe that Women Studies educates everyone by using stories and experiences of women and, how they’ve dealt with it. I don’t believe feminism is wrong but I do think that at times the people, not the concept, can get out of hand. As a result it gives a bad reputation to feminism when really it’s meant to inform the public of the issue between equality among men and women.
Gender has an influence in everyone because it’s portrayed constantly through media. It can affect how we act on our daily activities. It affects how I behave in certain situations and, I think it has to do with what I have seen and “learned” to be right. An example would be career choices, more specific, the military. Although now there are many women joining the military, it’s likely to believe there are more men. Or in other words this career is meant to be for men. I personally don’t think that is true. But through media and, in some instances family, people learn that because they are women they shouldn’t join. It’s the not the “proper” career choice because women are represented as being delicate. However, it’s not just careers that can influence gender but also going back to media, our music and movies. What we see and hear will affect how we think and act. I am looking forward to this semester and I hope to learn more about women studies.
